Types of Living Room Furniture

Sofa

From sleek and modern low-profile designs to the overstuffed and comfy, this living room staple comes in enough styles and configurations to fit any custom look. Spacious enough to comfortably seat at least three, sofas are typically paired with other seating, such as loveseats and armchairs, to create a coordinated living room with plenty of space for company.

Sleeper Sofa

For the home without the luxury of a guest room, a sleeper sofa is the perfect way to accommodate overnight guests. A sleeper is no different than other types of sofas, apart from a pull-out mattress and frame stowed beneath its cushions. Sleeper sofas also will weigh quite a bit more than other sofas due to their unique design, so keep that in mind if you need to maneuver it up and down stairs to place it.

Sectionals are great for large families or those who entertain guests often due to the ample seating space a single sofa provides. Another benefit is that they fill empty corners you may not know what to do with. Many sectional sofas come with recliner sections and other amenities, such as cup holders or built-in storage for remotes and blankets. If you want to maximize your space with a single piece of furniture, a sectional is one of the best ways to go.

Loveseat

This classic piece of furniture is usually bought as a secondary seating solution for your living room. Meant to fit two comfortably, hence the name, loveseats come in a variety of styles, materials, and patterns to easily complement the rest of your living room furniture and decor. Consider pairing a loveseat with a sofa or armchair and a coffee table for a custom living room set that feels complete.

Futon

A futon is a traditionally inexpensive and portable piece of furniture that can quickly transform its purpose from seating to sleeping. But just because futons can be affordable doesn’t mean they should look cheap. Metal-framed futons can be great additions to an Industrial or Modern living room, and there are many attractive futon styles to match any decor scheme.

Settee

An upholstered seat that fits more than one but is built slimmer than a loveseat is called a settee. A settee is a great choice for a parlor room or living room when space is limited. This type of furniture is reminiscent of Victorian charm and elegance, and should be used alongside decor that complements its more delicate nature.

Entertainment Center

An entertainment center is a media cabinet meant to contain your living room electronics. Many entertainment centers even have doors that can be closed shut to hide the cables, lights, and glossy screens that can be distractions in a carefully styled room. Most are made from wood and are typically quite tall.

Ottoman

Perhaps one of the most versatile pieces of living room furniture, an ottoman can provide extra storage, seating, and double as a footrest. Ottomans are typically cushioned and come in many shapes and sizes, from trunk-like to drum-shaped. Storage ottomans open to reveal extra space for blankets, remotes, or other small items. A cocktail ottoman is another popular variation ̶ it appears almost like a square coffee table with a tufted surface.
